The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of classical music, and has become one of the most respected and renowned orchestras in the world. The Orchestra was founded in Milan, Italy, and was originally known as the "Milan Symphony Orchestra." The ensemble was created with the goal of bringing together some of the most talented musicians in Italy, and providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and talents. The founding members of The Orchestra included some of the most talented musicians in Italy at the time, including violinist Salvatore Accardo, cellist Antonio Janigro, and pianist Maurizio Pollini. These musicians were all highly respected in their own right, and their collaboration in The Orchestra helped to create a truly exceptional ensemble. Over the years, The Orchestra has undergone several changes in membership, with many talented musicians joining and leaving the ensemble. However, the core of the ensemble has remained the same, with a focus on excellence in performance and a commitment to showcasing the best of classical music. One of the highlights of The Orchestra's early years was its performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1968. The ensemble's performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 was met with critical acclaim, and helped to establish The Orchestra as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the world. In the years that followed, The Orchestra continued to perform at some of the most prestigious venues and events in the world, including the Edinburgh Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The ensemble also recorded numerous albums, many of which received critical acclaim and helped to further establish The Orchestra's reputation as one of the best classical music ensembles in the world. One of the most notable members of The Orchestra in recent years was conductor Claudio Abbado. Abbado was a highly respected conductor and musician, and his leadership of The Orchestra helped to elevate the ensemble to new heights of excellence. Abbado served as the principal conductor of The Orchestra from 1972 to 1986, and then again from 1998 until his death in 2014. Under Abbado's leadership, The Orchestra continued to perform at the highest levels of excellence, and received numerous awards and accolades for its performances. In 2003, The Orchestra was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 9.
