He was born on January 2, 1929, in Warsaw, Poland. Salwarowski's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent. Salwarowski studied at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw, where he received a degree in piano performance. He also studied conducting with Witold Rowicki and Stanislaw Wislocki. After completing his studies, Salwarowski began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Poland. In 1956, Salwarowski made his debut as a conductor with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was appointed as the orchestra's assistant conductor. In 1960, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for six years. Salwarowski's career continued to flourish, and he was invited to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also conducted many of the leading opera companies, including the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. One of Salwarowski's most significant achievements was his work with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. He served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1977 to 1983 and then as its artistic director from 1983 to 1994. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the world's leading ensembles, earning critical acclaim for his performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. Salwarowski was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of the works of Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven are considered some of the finest interpretations of these composers' music. He received numerous awards for his recordings, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. In addition to his work as a conductor and pianist, Salwarowski was also a respected music educator. He taught at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw and was a visiting professor at many universities and conservatories throughout Europe and the United States. Salwarowski's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with many awards and honors. He was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest civilian honors, and was made an honorary citizen of Krakow. He was also awarded the Medal of Merit to Culture, the Gloria Artis Gold Medal, and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Jerzy Salwarowski passed away on August 23, 2017, at the age of 88. He left behind a legacy of exceptional musicianship and dedication to the art of classical music.
