O/Modernt is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by the Swedish violinist Hugo Ticciati. The ensemble is known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music, combining traditional repertoire with contemporary works and improvisation. Hugo Ticciati was born in Stockholm in 1980 and began playing the violin at the age of four. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London and has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Ticciati founded O/Modernt with the aim of exploring the connections between different musical genres and cultures. The ensemble's name is derived from the Swedish word "omodern," which means "unmodern" or "non-modern." This reflects the ensemble's interest in exploring the roots of classical music and its connections to other forms of music, such as folk and jazz. The ensemble's core members include Hugo Ticciati on violin, Simon Crawford-Phillips on piano, and Matthew Barley on cello. The ensemble also collaborates with a range of guest artists, including singers, dancers, and visual artists. O/Modernt has performed at some of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble has also released several critically acclaimed recordings, including "The Four Seasons: A Reimagining" and "Bach: The Cello Suites According to Anna Magdalena." One of the highlights of O/Modernt's career was their performance at the 2016 BBC Proms, where they presented a program titled "The Symphonic Body." The program explored the connections between music and the human body, featuring works by composers such as Bach, Stravinsky, and Ligeti. The performance was praised by critics for its innovative approach and powerful emotional impact. O/Modernt has also been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2015, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for "Audience Engagement." The award recognized the ensemble's innovative approach to programming and their efforts to engage new audiences with classical music. In addition to their performances and recordings, O/Modernt is also involved in a range of educational and outreach activities. The ensemble runs a music festival in Sweden each year, which features performances, workshops, and masterclasses. The festival is designed to bring together musicians and audiences from different backgrounds and cultures, and to promote dialogue and understanding through music. Overall, O/Modernt is a unique and innovative ensemble that is pushing the boundaries of classical music. Through their performances, recordings, and educational activities, they are inspiring new audiences and helping to create a more diverse and inclusive classical music community.
