The choir was founded in 1984 by Anne Page, who was the first female director of music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. The choir comprises of girls aged between 11 and 18 years, who are students at the college's affiliated school, The Perse School for Girls. The choir's early years were marked by a series of successful performances in the UK and Europe. In 1986, the choir performed at the prestigious Three Choirs Festival in Worcester, where they received critical acclaim for their performance of Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols." The following year, they performed at the International Festival of Youth Choirs in Belgium, where they won the first prize in the female choir category.
