Martin van de Merwe was born on May 12, 1985, in Cape Town, South Africa. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a classical pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Martin showed a keen interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Martin's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of eight. He was soon invited to play with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, where he impressed audiences with his technical skill and musicality.
