She was the daughter of Polish immigrants who had settled in Argentina. Her father was a tailor, and her mother was a homemaker. Baytelman showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Baytelman's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue music. She began taking piano lessons with a local teacher and quickly progressed. At the age of 11, she won a scholarship to study at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires. She studied there for six years and graduated with honors. After completing her studies, Baytelman began performing professionally. She made her debut with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 18, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a great success, and Baytelman quickly established herself as one of the leading pianists in Argentina. In 1956, Baytelman moved to the United States to continue her studies. She enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Rosina Lhévinne, a renowned piano teacher. Baytelman excelled at Juilliard and won several awards, including the prestigious Gina Bachauer Memorial Scholarship. After completing her studies at Juilliard, Baytelman began performing extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She played with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She also performed at major music festivals, such as the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. Baytelman was known for her virtuosic playing and her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she played. She was particularly admired for her interpretations of the music of Chopin and Debussy. Her performances were always highly praised by critics and audiences alike. In addition to her performing career, Baytelman was also a dedicated educator. She taught at several universities, including the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Maryland. She was known for her passionate and inspiring teaching style, and many of her students went on to have successful careers in music. Baytelman received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1986, she was awarded the Order of the Rio Branco by the Brazilian government for her contributions to Brazilian music. In 1992, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award by the Juilliard School. In 2002, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Argentine government. Baytelman continued to perform and teach until her death on December 30, 2013, at the age of 81.
