He was born on January 1, 1935, in New York City, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Brother Francis showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Brother Francis grew up in a musical household, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied piano and composition. After completing his studies, he began performing in concerts and recitals across the United States. In 1958, Brother Francis joined the Franciscan Order and became a friar. He performed in concerts and recitals at churches and other religious institutions, and his music became an integral part of his spiritual practice. Throughout his career, Brother Francis performed in many notable concerts and recitals. He also performed at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to his performances, Brother Francis also composed music. He wrote many pieces for piano, as well as choral and orchestral works. Some of his most notable works include "The Canticle of the Sun," a choral work based on the writings of St. Francis of Assisi, and "The Four Seasons," a suite for piano inspired by the changing seasons. Brother Francis received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1972, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Richard Nixon for his contributions to classical music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit by the government of Austria in recognition of his contributions to Austrian music.
