Kerekes attended the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to pursue his Master of Music degree in composition at the Yale School of Music. During his time at Yale, Kerekes studied with renowned composers such as Martin Bresnick, David Lang, and Christopher Theofanidis.
