Orchestre de Chambre de Paris is a classical music ensemble based in Paris, France. The orchestra was founded in 1978 by the French conductor and composer Armin Jordan, with the aim of promoting chamber music in Paris and beyond. Since its inception, the orchestra has become one of the most renowned chamber ensembles in Europe, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The early years of Orchestre de Chambre de Paris were marked by a series of successful performances in Paris and other major European cities. The orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its virtuosic playing and its commitment to exploring new and lesser-known works from the classical repertoire. In 1982, the orchestra made its debut at the prestigious Salzburg Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its performance of Mozart's Symphony No. 40. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris continued to build its reputation as one of the leading chamber ensembles in Europe. The orchestra collaborated with many of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, including Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, and Yo-Yo Ma. In 1994, the orchestra was invited to perform at the inauguration of the new Opéra Bastille in Paris, where it played a program of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky to a packed house. In the early 2000s, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris underwent a period of transition, with several changes in leadership and personnel. In 2004, the orchestra appointed the American conductor John Axelrod as its new music director, and under his leadership, the orchestra began to explore new directions in programming and outreach. Axelrod's tenure was marked by a series of innovative collaborations with artists from outside the classical music world, including the jazz pianist Brad Mehldau and the singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. In 2014, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris moved into its new home, the Philharmonie de Paris, a state-of-the-art concert hall designed by the architect Jean Nouvel. The move to the Philharmonie marked a new chapter in the orchestra's history, as it allowed the ensemble to expand its programming and reach new audiences. In recent years, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris has continued to push the boundaries of chamber music, with programs that combine classical works with contemporary music, jazz, and world music. Throughout its history, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1996, the orchestra won the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 21 with the pianist Maria João Pires. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the Victoire de la Musique Classique, the highest honor in French classical music, for its recording of works by the French composer Henri Dutilleux. Today, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris remains one of the most dynamic and innovative chamber ensembles in Europe. With its commitment to exploring new directions in programming and outreach, the orchestra continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike, and to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music.
