He was born on August 22, 1963, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. From a young age, Shewan showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Shewan began his musical journey by learning to play the trumpet. He was a natural talent and quickly progressed, winning several awards and accolades in his early years. He attended the University of Alberta, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. He then went on to complete a Master of Music degree in conducting at the University of British Columbia. After completing his studies, Shewan began his professional career as a trumpet player with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a talented musician and was soon offered a position with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Shewan played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for several years before deciding to pursue a career in conducting. Shewan's conducting career began in earnest when he was appointed as the Music Director of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra in 1991. He held this position for six years, during which time he transformed the orchestra into a world-class ensemble. Shewan's innovative programming and dynamic conducting style attracted a new audience to the orchestra, and he received widespread acclaim for his work. In 1997, Shewan was appointed as the Music Director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for 20 years, during which time he established the orchestra as one of the finest in Canada. Shewan's tenure at the University of Manitoba was marked by numerous highlights, including performances with world-renowned soloists and collaborations with other orchestras. Shewan's conducting career has taken him all over the world, and he has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras.
