The New York Chamber Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1957 by pianist and conductor Gerard Schwarz. The ensemble has been a fixture in the New York City music scene for over six decades, and has established itself as one of the premier chamber music groups in the world. The founding of the New York Chamber Ensemble was the result of a collaboration between Gerard Schwarz and a group of like-minded musicians who shared his passion for chamber music. The ensemble's original members included violinist Ani Kavafian, cellist Fred Sherry, and clarinetist David Shifrin, among others. From the beginning, the ensemble was dedicated to performing a wide range of classical music, from the Baroque era to contemporary works. Over the years, the New York Chamber Ensemble has undergone several changes in membership, but has always maintained its commitment to excellence in performance. Today, the ensemble is led by artistic director and clarinetist Charles Neidich, and includes a core group of musicians who have been with the ensemble for many years. One of the highlights of the New York Chamber Ensemble's career was its performance at the White House in 1987, where the group played for President Ronald Reagan and his guests. The ensemble has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. In addition to its live performances, the New York Chamber Ensemble has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to its credit. The ensemble's recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance in 1986.
