He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed the company's Assistant Conductor in 1995. He went on to become the company's Principal Conductor in 1999, a position he held until 2007. During his time at the Metropolitan Opera, Craig conducted many notable performances, including the world premiere of John Harbison's "The Great Gatsby" and the American premiere of Thomas Ades' "The Tempest." He was also awarded the Samuel Barber Rome Prize in 2003, which allowed him to spend a year in Rome studying and composing music.
