Ensemble Nordlys is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1997 in Denmark. The ensemble is known for its unique approach to classical music, which combines traditional classical music with contemporary music and improvisation. The ensemble has gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances, which have earned it critical acclaim and numerous awards. The founding members of Ensemble Nordlys were violinist Gunvor Sihm, cellist Morten Zeuthen, and pianist Per Salo. The three musicians had previously played together in various chamber music groups and orchestras, and they shared a passion for exploring new and unconventional approaches to classical music. They decided to form Ensemble Nordlys as a way to pursue this passion and to create a platform for their musical experimentation. From the beginning, Ensemble Nordlys was committed to exploring the boundaries of classical music and to incorporating elements of other musical genres into their performances. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Cage, and Steve Reich. The ensemble also incorporates improvisation into their performances, which allows them to create unique and spontaneous musical experiences for their audiences. Over the years, Ensemble Nordlys has expanded its membership to include a diverse group of musicians from around the world. The current members of the ensemble are Gunvor Sihm (violin), Morten Zeuthen (cello), Per Salo (piano), Anna Jalving (violin), and Andreas Borregaard (accordion). Each member brings their own unique musical background and perspective to the ensemble, which contributes to the ensemble's dynamic and innovative approach to classical music. Ensemble Nordlys has performed extensively throughout Denmark and Europe, and has gained a reputation for its engaging and dynamic performances. The ensemble has performed at numerous festivals and concert series, including the Copenhagen Summer Festival, the Aarhus Festival, and the Bergen International Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists and musicians, including dancers, visual artists, and poets. One of the highlights of Ensemble Nordlys' career was their performance at the 2006 Bergen International Festival. The ensemble performed a program of works by contemporary composers, including Arvo Pärt's "Fratres" and Steve Reich's "Different Trains." The performance was praised for its innovative and engaging approach to contemporary classical music, and helped to establish Ensemble Nordlys as one of the leading ensembles in the field. Ensemble Nordlys has also been recognized for its contributions to classical music with numerous awards and honors. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the Danish Music Critics' Prize for their album "Nordic Soundscapes," which featured works by Nordic composers. The ensemble has also been awarded the prestigious Danish Arts Foundation's Artist Prize, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the arts in Denmark. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Nordlys is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has developed a program for schools that introduces students to classical music and improvisation.
