He started taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Thaw's breakthrough performance came in 2005 when he won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The competition is held every four years and is considered one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. Thaw's performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 impressed the judges and the audience, and he was declared the winner. The Van Cliburn win opened doors for Thaw to perform in major concert halls around the world.
