Uccello is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2008 by cellist Julian Smiles. The ensemble is made up of some of Australia's most talented and accomplished musicians, including violinist Satu Vänskä, violist Elizabeth Woolnough, and cellist Blair Harris. The ensemble's name, Uccello, is Italian for "bird," and reflects the group's desire to soar to new heights in their music-making. From the beginning, Uccello has been committed to exploring new and innovative ways of presenting classical music to audiences, and has become known for their dynamic and engaging performances. One of the highlights of Uccello's early years was their collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, which resulted in a critically acclaimed recording of the music of Arvo Pärt. The ensemble also performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the 2009 Sydney Festival, and has since gone on to perform at major festivals and venues throughout Australia and around the world. In 2012, Uccello released their debut album, "Uccello: The Other Side," which featured a mix of classical and contemporary works, including pieces by Bach, Piazzolla, and Radiohead. The album was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and helped to establish Uccello as one of Australia's most exciting and innovative classical ensembles. Since then, Uccello has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, collaborating with artists from a wide range of genres and backgrounds. In 2016, the ensemble teamed up with Australian hip-hop artist L-FRESH The LION for a performance at the Sydney Opera House, which was hailed as a groundbreaking fusion of classical and contemporary music. Uccello has also been recognized for their outstanding musicianship and innovative approach to classical music. In 2014, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Area, in recognition of their work in bringing classical music to audiences in regional Australia. In addition to their performances and recordings, Uccello is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has worked with schools and community groups to promote the value of classical music. Overall, Uccello is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is redefining the boundaries of classical music. With their commitment to excellence, creativity, and collaboration, they are sure to continue making waves in the world of classical music for years to come.
