Jean-Louis Haguenauer is a renowned classical pianist and professor of music at the University of Indiana. Born in Strasbourg, France in 1954, Haguenauer began playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won first prize in piano performance and chamber music. Haguenauer's career as a concert pianist began in the early 1980s, when he won several international competitions, including the Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona and the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition in Cleveland. He has since performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a soloist, Haguenauer is also a highly respected chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading instrumentalists, including violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Lynn Harrell, and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. He is a founding member of the Paris Piano Trio, which has performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States. Haguenauer's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, as well as more contemporary composers such as Messiaen and Boulez. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Debussy and Ravel, and has recorded several albums of their works. In addition to his performing career, Haguenauer is also a highly respected teacher. He has taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the École Normale de Musique de Paris, and the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Since 1996, he has been a professor of music at the University of Indiana, where he has mentored many of today's leading young pianists. Haguenauer has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1986, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Ravel's complete works for piano. In 1990, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for his contributions to the arts. In 2000, he was awarded the Indiana University President's Award for Distinguished Teaching, the highest teaching award given by the university. Despite his many accomplishments, Haguenauer remains dedicated to his craft and to his students. He continues to perform and teach around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the leading pianists and teachers of his generation.
