Sydney Hodkinson was an American composer and conductor who was born on June 22, 1934, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Hodkinson began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin and viola. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After completing his undergraduate studies, Hodkinson continued his education at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition. He also studied conducting with the renowned conductor and composer, Howard Hanson. Hodkinson later earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Hodkinson's early compositions were influenced by the serialism and atonality of the mid-20th century. However, he later developed a more eclectic style that incorporated elements of jazz, rock, and other popular music genres. His compositions often featured complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as unconventional instrumentation. One of Hodkinson's most notable works is his Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1976. The symphony is a large-scale work that features a wide range of musical styles and influences. It includes elements of jazz, rock, and classical music, as well as references to American folk music. The symphony has been praised for its innovative use of orchestration and its ability to blend different musical genres seamlessly. Hodkinson also composed a number of chamber works, including his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet in 1965. The quartet is a complex and challenging work that features intricate rhythms and harmonies. It has been praised for its technical virtuosity and its ability to push the boundaries of traditional chamber music. In addition to his work as a composer, Hodkinson was also a respected conductor. He served as the music director of the Contemporary Chamber Players at the University of Illinois from 1966 to 1971 and later served as the conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1982. He also conducted numerous other orchestras and ensembles throughout his career. Hodkinson was a prolific composer, with over 100 works to his name. His compositions have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was also the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Hodkinson passed away on November 22, 2017, at the age of 83. His legacy as a composer and conductor continues to be celebrated by musicians and music lovers around the world. His innovative and eclectic style has influenced generations of composers and his contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for years to come.
