Born on August 26, 1959, in New York City, Phillips grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a painter, which exposed him to different forms of artistic expression from an early age. Phillips began his musical journey by learning to play the piano at the age of six. He later picked up the trumpet and played in his high school band. However, it was not until he attended the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester that he discovered his passion for conducting. Phillips studied under the tutelage of David Effron, a renowned conductor, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1981. After completing his undergraduate studies, Phillips continued his education at the Yale School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1983. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1987. During his time at Juilliard, Phillips studied with the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, who had a profound influence on his musical style and approach. Phillips began his professional career as a conductor in 1985 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to associate conductor in 1988. During his time in Dallas, Phillips conducted numerous concerts and made several recordings with the orchestra, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In 1990, Phillips was appointed as the music director of the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières in Quebec, Canada. He held this position for five years and led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. In 1995, Phillips was appointed as the music director of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra in Florida, a position he held until 2003. During his tenure with the orchestra, Phillips conducted numerous concerts and collaborated with renowned soloists such as Joshua Bell and Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to his work as a conductor, Phillips is also an accomplished composer. He has written numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Phillips is also a dedicated music educator and has held teaching positions at several prestigious institutions. He has served as the director of orchestral studies at Brown University, the director of the orchestral program at the University of Oregon, and the director of the orchestral program at the University of California, Davis. Phillips is currently the director of orchestral activities at Stanford University, where he leads the university's orchestras and teaches conducting and composition. Throughout his career, Phillips has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1992, he was awarded the Prix Opus for Best Conductor of the Year by the Conseil québécois de la musique. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Eastman School of Music.
