The ensemble is known for its innovative and dynamic performances that showcase the versatility and power of percussion instruments. The founding members of Maelström Percussion Ensemble were Aiyun Huang, Ryan Scott, and Ben Reimer. All three members were accomplished percussionists who had studied at prestigious music schools and had performed with various orchestras and ensembles around the world. From the beginning, Maelström Percussion Ensemble set out to push the boundaries of classical music and explore new sounds and techniques. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by contemporary composers as well as traditional classical pieces that have been arranged for percussion instruments. One of the highlights of Maelström Percussion Ensemble's early career was their performance at the 2010 Montreal/New Music Festival. The ensemble's performance of John Luther Adams' "Strange and Sacred Noise" was praised for its intensity and precision, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the most exciting and innovative percussion groups in Canada. Over the years, Maelström Percussion Ensemble has continued to perform at major music festivals and venues around the world. In 2012, the ensemble performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Austin, Texas, where they premiered a new work by composer Nicole Lizée. In 2014, Maelström Percussion Ensemble released their debut album, "The Unusual Sky," which features works by composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, and Iannis Xenakis. The album was well-received by critics and helped to further establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative percussion groups in the world. In addition to their performances and recordings, Maelström Percussion Ensemble has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2011, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for "Discovery of the Year" by the Conseil québécois de la musique. The following year, they were awarded the Prix Opus for "Concert of the Year - Modern and Contemporary Music" for their performance at the Montreal/New Music Festival. Today, Maelström Percussion Ensemble continues to push the boundaries of classical music and explore new sounds and techniques.
