Sato Moughalian is a renowned classical flutist, educator, and author. She was born in New York City in 1954 to Armenian parents who had fled the genocide in their homeland. Her father was a composer and conductor, and her mother was a pianist. Growing up in a musical household, Sato was exposed to classical music from a young age and began playing the flute at the age of nine. Sato attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied with Julius Baker, one of the most prominent flutists of the 20th century. After graduating from Juilliard, Sato began her professional career as a flutist, performing with various orchestras and chamber ensembles in the United States and Europe. One of the highlights of Sato's early career was her performance as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. She also performed with the American Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Opera, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, among others. In addition to her performing career, Sato has also been a dedicated educator. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Bard College Conservatory of Music. She has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing her expertise with aspiring flutists. Sato's passion for music extends beyond performance and education. She is also an author and historian, with a particular interest in the music of the Armenian diaspora. In 2015, she published a book titled "The Music of the Armenian Diaspora," which explores the history and evolution of Armenian music in the 20th century. One of Sato's most significant achievements as a musician and historian was the founding of the Armenian Music Program at the Columbia University Department of Music. The program, which Sato directed from 2005 to 2015, was the first of its kind in the United States and aimed to promote the study and performance of Armenian music. Sato's dedication to Armenian music has also led her to explore her own family's musical heritage. In 2017, she released an album titled "Havik," which features traditional Armenian music arranged for flute and piano. The album was a collaboration with her son, pianist and composer Narek Arutyunian. Throughout her career, Sato has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 2010, she was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to American society. She has also been recognized by the Armenian General Benevolent Union and the Armenian National Committee of America for her work in promoting Armenian music and culture. In addition to her performing, teaching, and writing, Sato is also a dedicated advocate for social justice and human rights. She has been involved in various organizations that work to promote peace and justice in the world, including the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and the International Association of Genocide Scholars. In conclusion, Sato Moughalian is a multifaceted artist whose contributions to the world of classical music extend far beyond her performances as a flutist. Her dedication to education, history, and social justice has made her a respected figure in the music world and beyond. Her legacy as a musician, educator, and advocate will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
