Trio Martinu is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1990 in the Czech Republic. The ensemble is named after the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, who is known for his contributions to 20th-century classical music. The founding members of Trio Martinu were violinist Bohuslav Matoušek, cellist Jiří Bárta, and pianist Josef Palenicek. All three musicians were accomplished soloists in their own right, but they came together to form the ensemble with the goal of exploring the chamber music repertoire. Since its founding, Trio Martinu has become one of the most respected and sought-after chamber ensembles in the world. The ensemble has performed in major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and has collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of our time. One of the highlights of Trio Martinu's career was their performance at the 1994 Prague Spring Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their interpretation of Martinu's Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano No. 2. The ensemble has also been recognized for their performances of works by other Czech composers, including Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček. In addition to their performances, Trio Martinu has also recorded extensively. The ensemble's discography includes recordings of works by Martinu, Dvořák, Janáček, and other composers, and has received numerous awards and accolades. One of the most notable awards received by Trio Martinu was the 2003 Grand Prix du Disque, which they received for their recording of Martinu's Complete Piano Trios. The ensemble has also been recognized with the Czech Chamber Music Society Award and the Czech Music Critics' Award. Despite changes in personnel over the years, Trio Martinu has remained committed to their mission of exploring the chamber music repertoire. The current members of the ensemble are violinist Pavel Šporcl, cellist Jiří Bárta (one of the founding members), and pianist Ivo Kahánek. Together, the members of Trio Martinu continue to perform and record works by a wide range of composers, from the classical masters to contemporary composers. Their dedication to their craft and their passion for chamber music has made them one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the world of classical music.
