Born on September 11, 1945, in Rome, Italy, Gelmetti showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at the age of six. He later went on to study composition and conducting at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Gelmetti's career as a conductor began in the early 1970s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma. In 1978, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, a position he held for over a decade.
