Corey Dargel is a contemporary classical music artist known for his unique blend of electronic and acoustic sounds, as well as his innovative approach to songwriting and composition. Born in 1977 in New York City, Dargel grew up in a musical family and began playing piano at a young age. He later studied music at Oberlin College and the University of Michigan, where he earned a Master's degree in composition. Dargel's early work focused on experimental electronic music, incorporating elements of glitch, ambient, and IDM. His debut album, Less Famous Than You, was released in 2005 and received critical acclaim for its intricate soundscapes and complex rhythms. The album was followed by two more electronic releases, Other People's Love Songs (2007) and Someone Will Take Care of Me (2010), both of which showcased Dargel's unique approach to electronic music. In 2011, Dargel shifted his focus to classical composition, releasing the album Every Day Is the Same Day on the New Amsterdam Records label. The album featured a collection of songs for voice and chamber ensemble, exploring themes of love, loss, and memory. The album was praised for its emotional depth and lyrical complexity, and earned Dargel a spot on the New York Times' list of "Best Classical Music of 2011." Since then, Dargel has continued to explore the intersection of classical and electronic music, creating works that blend acoustic instruments with electronic sounds and textures. His 2014 album, OK It's Not OK, featured a collection of songs for voice and electronics, exploring themes of anxiety, depression, and mental illness. The album was praised for its honesty and vulnerability, and earned Dargel a spot on NPR's list of "Best Classical Albums of 2014." In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Dargel is also an accomplished writer and educator. He has written extensively on music and culture, and has taught at a number of universities and conservatories, including the University of Michigan, the New School, and the Manhattan School of Music. Throughout his career, Dargel has received numerous awards and honors for his work in music. In 2012, he was awarded a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and in 2014 he was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his album OK It's Not OK. He has also been awarded residencies at a number of prestigious institutions, including the MacDowell Colony and the Yaddo Artist Colony. Despite his many accomplishments, Dargel remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new forms of expression. His work continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world, and he remains one of the most innovative and exciting voices in contemporary classical music today.
