Her father was a composer and her mother was a pianist, so music was always a part of her life. She began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and the accordion. Beglarian attended the University of Michigan, where she studied composition with William Albright and Leslie Bassett. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1980 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music in 1982. She worked with a variety of musicians and artists, including Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, and John Cage. She also co-founded the music collective The Knights of the Kitchen Table, which performed experimental music in unconventional spaces. Beglarian's early works were influenced by minimalism and experimental music. Her compositions often featured repetitive patterns and unconventional instrumentation. One of her most well-known works from this period is "The Story of B," a multimedia piece that combines music, text, and images. In the 1990s, Beglarian began to incorporate more traditional forms and instrumentation into her work. She composed several chamber music pieces, including "I Will Not Be Sad in This World" for string quartet and "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" for soprano and chamber ensemble. Beglarian's music is often inspired by literature, history, and the natural world. She has composed several works based on the writings of Virginia Woolf, including "A Book of Days," a collection of pieces for various instruments and voices that are inspired by Woolf's diary entries. In addition to her work as a composer, Beglarian is also a performer and sound artist. She has collaborated with a variety of musicians and artists, including the Bang on a Can All-Stars and the Kronos Quartet. She has also created several sound installations, including "The Garden of Cyrus," which features recordings of natural sounds from around the world. Beglarian's work has been performed at venues and festivals around the world, including the Lincoln Center Festival, the Bang on a Can Marathon, and the MATA Festival. She has received numerous awards and grants for her work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Overall, Eve Beglarian is a versatile and innovative composer who has made significant contributions to the contemporary classical music scene. Her work combines elements of minimalism, experimental music, and traditional forms to create a unique and compelling sound.
