Michael East was a prominent English composer of the late Renaissance period, born in 1580 in Wiltshire, England. He was the son of a clergyman and was educated at Oxford University, where he studied music and became a member of the choir. East was a talented musician from a young age and showed a great interest in composing music. East's early career was spent as a musician and composer in London, where he worked as a singer and composer for the Chapel Royal. He also worked as a music teacher and was highly regarded for his skills as a composer and performer. East's music was influenced by the works of other prominent composers of the time, including William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. East's most significant contribution to music was his development of the English madrigal, a form of secular vocal music that was popular in England during the Renaissance period. East's madrigals were characterized by their use of complex harmonies and intricate vocal lines, which were often accompanied by instruments such as lutes and viols. East's most famous work is his collection of madrigals, entitled "Madrigals to 3, 4, 5, and 6 Voices," which was published in 1604. The collection contains 34 madrigals, which are considered some of the finest examples of English madrigals from the Renaissance period. The collection was highly influential and was widely performed and admired throughout Europe. East's other notable works include his "First Set of Madrigals and Motets of 5 Parts," which was published in 1598, and his "Second Set of Madrigals and Motets of 5 Parts," which was published in 1606. Both collections contain a mix of madrigals and motets, which were popular forms of vocal music during the Renaissance period. East's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. His music was performed throughout Europe and was admired for its complexity and beauty. East's influence on the development of English madrigals was significant, and his works continue to be studied and performed by musicians and scholars today. East died in 1648, at the age of 68. His legacy as a composer and musician continues to be celebrated, and his contributions to the development of English madrigals remain an important part of the history of classical music.
