He was raised in a musical family, and his father was a conductor and composer. Goldmann began his musical education at an early age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he was a student of Ruth Zechlin and Hanns Eisler. Goldmann's early compositions were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s, and he was associated with the New Music movement in Germany. He was particularly interested in the use of electronic music and experimented with tape music and live electronics in his compositions. His early works include "Musik für drei Instrumentalgruppen" (1964) and "Musik für Violine und Klavier" (1965). In the 1970s, Goldmann's music became more tonal and expressive, and he began to incorporate elements of traditional tonality into his compositions. He also began to write more large-scale works, including symphonies, concertos, and operas. His works from this period include "Symphonie in einem Satz" (1977), "Konzert für Violine und Orchester" (1978), and "Die Himmelsmechanik" (1979). Goldmann was also an accomplished conductor, and he conducted many of his own works as well as works by other composers. He was particularly interested in the music of Gustav Mahler and conducted many performances of Mahler's symphonies. He was also a champion of contemporary music and conducted premieres of works by many composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, and György Ligeti. Goldmann received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 1995 and the Berlin Art Prize in 2001. He was also a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin in 2006. Goldmann continued to compose and conduct until his death on January 24, 2009, in Berlin, Germany. His music continues to be performed and recorded by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he is considered one of the most important composers of the late 20th century.More....
