The Bucharest National Radio Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Bucharest, Romania. It was founded in 1928 as the Romanian Radio Orchestra and has since become one of the most prestigious orchestras in the country. The orchestra was established by the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company, which was founded in 1927. The company's goal was to promote Romanian culture and music through radio broadcasts, and the orchestra was an important part of this mission. The first conductor of the orchestra was the Romanian composer and conductor George Enescu, who led the ensemble in its early years. Over the years, the Bucharest National Radio Orchestra has had many distinguished conductors, including Sergiu Celibidache, Cristian Mandeal, and Horia Andreescu. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Yehudi Menuhin, Martha Argerich, and Radu Lupu. The orchestra has won numerous awards for its recordings, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. The Bucharest National Radio Orchestra has also been recognized for its contributions to Romanian culture. In 2008, the orchestra was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Romanian government. The award recognized the orchestra's role in promoting Romanian music and culture both at home and abroad. Today, the Bucharest National Radio Orchestra continues to be an important part of Romania's cultural landscape. It performs regularly at the Romanian Athenaeum, one of the country's most prestigious concert halls, and also tours extensively both within Romania and abroad.
