Ensemble Sospeso is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in New York City. The ensemble was founded in 2002 by conductor and composer, David Bloom, with the aim of exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music performance. The ensemble's core members include some of the most talented and accomplished musicians in the contemporary classical music scene. These include violinist Miranda Cuckson, cellist Jeffrey Zeigler, pianist Vicky Chow, and percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum, among others. Ensemble Sospeso has gained a reputation for its adventurous and boundary-pushing performances, which often incorporate elements of improvisation, electronics, and multimedia. The ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including composers, visual artists, and dancers, to create unique and immersive performance experiences. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its 2010 production of György Ligeti's opera, Le Grand Macabre, which was staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The production, which was directed by Doug Fitch and featured a cast of over 100 performers, received widespread critical acclaim and was hailed as a landmark achievement in contemporary opera. Ensemble Sospeso has also been recognized for its recordings, which have received numerous awards and accolades. The ensemble's 2012 album, "Luciano Berio: Circles and Sequenzas," was named one of the best classical albums of the year by The New York Times, while its 2015 album, "Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians," was nominated for a Grammy Award. In addition to its performances and recordings, Ensemble Sospeso is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to underserved communities.
