Dmitri Bashkirov is a renowned classical pianist and pedagogue, born on April 1, 1931, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Bashkirov began his musical education at the age of five, studying piano with his mother. He later went on to study at the Tbilisi Conservatory, where he was a student of Alexander Goldenweiser. In 1955, Bashkirov won first prize at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition in Paris, which launched his international career. He went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, and Zubin Mehta. Bashkirov's repertoire is vast, ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary music. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Chopin. His performances are characterized by his technical brilliance, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of the composer's intentions. In addition to his performing career, Bashkirov is also a highly respected pedagogue. He has taught at the Moscow Conservatory, the Madrid Royal Conservatory, and the Reina Sofia School of Music in Madrid. Many of his students have gone on to have successful careers as pianists, including Arcadi Volodos, Nikolai Lugansky, and Denis Matsuev. Bashkirov has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1997, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government, and in 2002, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He has also been awarded the Gold Medal of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and the Grand Prix du Disque. One of Bashkirov's most notable performances was his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan in 1979. The performance was recorded and released on DVD, and is considered one of the greatest performances of the concerto. Bashkirov has also been involved in many recordings throughout his career. He has recorded the complete piano works of Chopin, as well as works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Bashkirov is also a writer. He has written several books on music, including "The Art of Piano Interpretation" and "The Piano: A Guide for the Listener and the Player." Bashkirov continues to perform and teach, and is considered one of the greatest pianists of his generation. His contributions to the world of classical music have been immense, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.
