Artist Info

Jennifer France is a British soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born in 1987 in the town of Stockton-on-Tees in the northeast of England, France showed an early interest in music and began singing in choirs at a young age. She went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honors. France's career as a professional singer began in earnest in 2013, when she won the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Award, a competition for young singers that has launched the careers of many notable performers. This award brought her to the attention of the classical music world, and she quickly began to receive invitations to perform in major venues and festivals. One of France's early breakthrough performances came in 2014, when she sang the role of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" at the Glyndebourne Festival in England. This role is notoriously difficult, requiring a soprano with a high range and great agility, and France's performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and dramatic intensity. She went on to reprise the role in productions at the Royal Opera House in London and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. France has also made a name for herself as a performer of contemporary music, and has premiered works by several prominent composers. In 2016, she sang the lead role in the world premiere of "The Exterminating Angel," an opera by British composer Thomas Adès based on the surrealist film of the same name. The production, which was staged at the Salzburg Festival, received widespread critical acclaim and was later broadcast on television and in cinemas around the world. In addition to her work on the opera stage, France is also a sought-after concert performer and has appeared with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. She has a particular affinity for the music of Benjamin Britten, and has sung several of his works, including the "War Requiem" and the song cycle "Les Illuminations." She has also performed works by Handel, Bach, and other composers from the Baroque era, as well as more contemporary pieces by composers such as George Benjamin and Kaija Saariaho. France's talent and hard work have been recognized with several awards and honors. In addition to the Kathleen Ferrier Award, she has won the John Christie Award from Glyndebourne and the Susan Chilcott Scholarship from the Royal Philharmonic Society. She was also a finalist in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2017, cementing her status as one of the most promising young singers of her generation. Looking to the future, France shows no signs of slowing down. She has several high-profile engagements lined up, including a production of "The Magic Flute" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and a concert performance of Britten's "War Requiem" at the Royal Festival Hall in London. With her technical prowess, dramatic flair, and commitment to both traditional and contemporary repertoire, Jennifer France is sure to remain a major force in the world of classical music for years to come.
