He was born on August 28, 1954, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Todd was exposed to music from a very young age and started playing the cello when he was six years old. Todd's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. He was a student of Leonard Rose, one of the most renowned cellists of the 20th century. Todd's career as a professional musician began in the 1970s when he joined the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a talented cellist and became a sought-after performer. He has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
