His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. From a young age, Phillips was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, which helped shape his eclectic style. Phillips began playing the cello at the age of eight and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied under some of the most respected cello teachers in the country, including Gabor Rejto and Bernard Greenhouse. Phillips also attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he earned a degree in cello performance. With the Consort, Phillips toured extensively and recorded several albums, including the Grammy-winning "Common Ground." In addition to his work with the Paul Winter Consort, Phillips also began composing his own music. His compositions were heavily influenced by his love of world music, and he often incorporated elements of Indian, African, and Middle Eastern music into his pieces. His first solo album, "Cello," was released in 1980 and featured his original compositions for solo cello. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Phillips continued to perform and record with a variety of groups and musicians. He collaborated with the likes of guitarist Alex de Grassi, pianist George Winston, and singer Linda Ronstadt. He also continued to compose his own music, releasing several albums of original compositions. In 2000, Phillips founded the group Orion's Bow, which blended classical, world, and new age music. The group released several albums and toured extensively, performing at venues such as the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Phillips is also a respected producer. He has produced albums for a variety of artists, including singer-songwriter Joan Baez and the Kronos Quartet. He has also produced several albums of his own music, including "Cello Blue" and "Heart of the World." Throughout his career, Phillips has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of classical music. He has won several Grammy Awards, including one for his work with the Paul Winter Consort and another for his production of the album "Lullaby and Doina" by the Kronos Quartet.
