He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with several renowned pianists in Vienna. August's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. In 1965, August made his debut as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He was only 15 years old at the time, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. This performance marked the beginning of August's career as a concert pianist. Over the next few years, August continued to perform with various orchestras and gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He won several awards and competitions, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1970.
