Period:RomanticModernGenre:ChamberOrchestralMax Hobart was born on May 12, 1940, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Hobart showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Hobart's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying with renowned violinist Ivan Galamian at the age of 12 and continued his studies at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1962, Hobart joined the New York Philharmonic as a member of the second violin section. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed concertmaster in 1976, a position he held for 22 years. During his tenure as concertmaster, Hobart became known for his impeccable technique and musicality. He was a frequent soloist with the orchestra, performing works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Hobart also collaborated with many other musicians during his career. He performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Guarneri Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet, among others. In addition to his work as a performer, Hobart was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Hobart's contributions to classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1991 and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Hobart retired from the New York Philharmonic in 1998 but continued to perform and teach. He passed away on January 4, 2011, at the age of 70.
