Staern's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Hilding Rosenberg. He later continued his studies in Paris with the famous pianist, Alfred Cortot. Staern's training under these great musicians helped him develop a unique style and technique that would set him apart from other classical pianists. In 1951, Staern made his debut as a soloist with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Staern quickly gained recognition as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He went on to perform with many other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Staern's repertoire was vast and included works by many great composers, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Swedish composer, Wilhelm Stenhammar, and was instrumental in bringing Stenhammar's music to a wider audience. Throughout his career, Staern received numerous awards and accolades for his performances. In 1953, he was awarded the prestigious Litteris et Artibus medal by the Swedish government for his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Medal of Honor in 1978. One of Staern's most memorable performances was his 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert was a tribute to the music of Wilhelm Stenhammar and featured Staern performing Stenhammar's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the New York Philharmonic. The performance was a huge success and received rave reviews from critics. Staern was also a prolific recording artist and recorded many of his performances for posterity. His recordings of Stenhammar's music are particularly noteworthy and are considered some of the best interpretations of the composer's work. In addition to his performing and recording career, Staern was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and was a visiting professor at many other music schools around the world.
