Ilari Angervo is a Finnish classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and musical interpretations. Born on May 22, 1987, in Helsinki, Finland, Angervo showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent and quickly progressed in his studies, winning his first competition at the age of nine. Angervo continued his musical education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue Liisa Pohjola. He also received mentorship from other notable pianists, including Olli Mustonen and András Schiff. During his studies, Angervo won several awards and competitions, including the first prize at the International Young Pianists Competition in Ettlingen, Germany, in 2003. After completing his studies at the Sibelius Academy, Angervo continued his education at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, where he studied with Professor Arie Vardi. He also participated in masterclasses with distinguished pianists such as Murray Perahia, Alfred Brendel, and Krystian Zimerman. Angervo's career as a concert pianist began to take off in the early 2010s, with performances in major concert halls across Europe and Asia. He has performed with many leading orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Sakari Oramo, Hannu Lintu, and John Storgårds. One of Angervo's most notable performances was his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2015, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Munich Chamber Orchestra. The performance was highly praised by critics, with the Berliner Morgenpost describing Angervo's playing as "brilliant and sensitive." Angervo has also been recognized for his recordings, which have received critical acclaim and won several awards. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas Nos. 30-32 was awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik Award in 2018, and his recording of Schumann's Piano Concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra was nominated for the same award in 2019. In addition to his performances and recordings, Angervo is also a dedicated teacher and has given masterclasses at institutions such as the Royal College of Music in London and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is currently a professor of piano at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Angervo's musical style is characterized by his technical precision, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of the composers he performs. He is particularly known for his interpretations of Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, but has also performed works by contemporary composers such as Magnus Lindberg and Kaija Saariaho.
