Born on August 23, 1954, in Lviv, Ukraine, Soroka showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. She was a prodigious talent and quickly gained recognition for her exceptional abilities. Soroka's early musical education was in the Soviet Union, where she studied at the Lviv Music School and later at the Kiev Conservatory. She was a student of the renowned violinist Abram Shtern, who recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Soroka's training was rigorous, and she spent many hours practicing and perfecting her technique. In 1979, Soroka moved to the United States to continue her studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. She earned a Master of Music degree and a Performer's Certificate from Eastman and went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. Soroka's time at Juilliard was transformative, and she credits her teachers, Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, with helping her to refine her technique and develop her musical style. Soroka's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s, and she quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent. She has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Soroka has also performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Soroka's most notable performances was her 1991 debut at Carnegie Hall, where she performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Soroka received rave reviews for her virtuosic playing and emotional depth. Soroka has also been recognized for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1995, she was awarded the Order of Merit by the President of Ukraine for her outstanding achievements in the arts. She has also been the recipient of numerous other awards and honors, including the Ukrainian-American Woman of the Year Award and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's Outstanding Musician Award. In addition to her work as a soloist, Soroka is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Borromeo String Quartet and the Kiev Chamber Players. Soroka is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan. Soroka's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the world's greatest composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the music of Ukrainian composers, including Mykola Lysenko and Yevhen Stankovych. Soroka has recorded extensively, and her recordings have received critical acclaim for their technical excellence and emotional depth.
