William Winstead is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on August 22, 1950, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Winstead grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a professional bassoonist. This early exposure to music sparked his interest in the art form, and he began playing the bassoon at a young age. Winstead attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned bassoonist Leonard Sharrow. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1972 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School in New York City. While at Juilliard, Winstead studied with bassoonist Harold Goltzer and graduated in 1974. After completing his studies, Winstead began his professional career as a bassoonist. He joined the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1974 and played with the orchestra for 35 years. During his tenure with the orchestra, he also served as the principal bassoonist for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Winstead's talent as a bassoonist quickly gained recognition, and he began to receive invitations to perform with other orchestras and ensembles. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. He has also performed with chamber music groups such as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Tokyo String Quartet. In addition to his performances as a bassoonist, Winstead has also made a name for himself as a teacher and mentor. He has taught at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians. Winstead's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Outstanding Musician Award. He was also awarded the Ohio Governor's Award for the Arts in 1993. In 2009, he was inducted into the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Hall of Fame. One of the highlights of Winstead's career was his performance of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1999. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it received critical acclaim. The Cincinnati Enquirer called it "a performance of great beauty and depth." Winstead's dedication to his craft and his passion for music have made him a beloved figure in the world of classical music. He continues to perform, teach, and inspire others with his talent and expertise.
