Victor Desarzens was a Swiss conductor and composer who made significant contributions to the classical music world during his lifetime. He was born on August 8, 1918, in Lausanne, Switzerland, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Desarzens showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano and violin. Desarzens received his formal music education at the Lausanne Conservatory, where he studied composition, conducting, and piano. He also studied with renowned conductors such as Ernest Ansermet and Charles Munch. In 1941, he made his debut as a conductor with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, which marked the beginning of his illustrious career. Desarzens quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was appointed as the conductor of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in 1947. He held this position for over 20 years and transformed the orchestra into one of the most respected ensembles in Europe. Under his leadership, the orchestra performed extensively throughout Switzerland and toured internationally, earning critical acclaim for their performances. In addition to his work with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Desarzens also conducted many other orchestras, including the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, and the Basel Symphony Orchestra. He was known for his ability to bring out the best in his musicians and for his meticulous attention to detail. Desarzens was also a prolific composer and wrote numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions were often inspired by Swiss folk music and the natural beauty of his homeland. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in 1951, and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, which was premiered by the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra in 1963. Throughout his career, Desarzens received many awards and honors for his contributions to the classical music world. In 1955, he was awarded the Prix de Lausanne for his work with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. He was also awarded the Prix de la Fondation de France in 1962 and the Prix de la Ville de Lausanne in 1972. Desarzens continued to conduct and compose music well into his later years. He passed away on December 25, 2013, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional music and a deep love for his craft.
