He was raised in a family of musicians, and his father was a professional oboist, which inspired him to pursue a career in music. Turnbull attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the guidance of oboist Christopher Cowie. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and his performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. One of Turnbull's most significant achievements was his appointment as the principal oboist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011. In addition to his work with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Turnbull has also performed with other leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
