L'art pour l'art is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 in Berlin, Germany. The ensemble's name translates to "art for art's sake," which reflects their commitment to creating music purely for the sake of artistic expression. The founding members of L'art pour l'art were violinist Barbara Lüneburg, cellist Jan-Filip Ťupa, and pianist Andreas Staffel. All three musicians had extensive experience performing in various classical music ensembles before coming together to form L'art pour l'art. From the beginning, L'art pour l'art set out to explore the boundaries of classical music and to create innovative and experimental performances. They quickly gained a reputation for their unique approach to classical music, which often involved incorporating elements of other genres such as jazz and rock. One of the highlights of L'art pour l'art's early career was their performance at the 2006 Berliner Festspiele, a prestigious music festival in Berlin. Their performance, which included works by contemporary composers such as John Cage and György Ligeti, was well-received by both audiences and critics. In the years that followed, L'art pour l'art continued to push the boundaries of classical music with their innovative performances. They collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, visual artists, and poets, to create multimedia performances that combined music with other art forms. One of the most notable collaborations in L'art pour l'art's history was their partnership with the German poet and artist Michael Lentz. Together, they created a performance called "Morphonologie," which combined Lentz's poetry with L'art pour l'art's music. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and it was later released as a CD. In addition to their collaborations with other artists, L'art pour l'art also continued to perform traditional classical music. They were particularly known for their interpretations of works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. One of the highlights of L'art pour l'art's career came in 2012, when they were awarded the prestigious German Record Critics' Award for their album "Bach: The Art of Fugue." The album, which featured L'art pour l'art's interpretation of Bach's famous work, was praised for its innovative approach to the music. Throughout their career, L'art pour l'art has continued to tour extensively, performing in venues across Europe and beyond. They have also released several albums, including "Bach: The Art of Fugue," "Morphonologie," and "L'art pour l'art plays Beethoven." Today, L'art pour l'art continues to be one of the most innovative and experimental classical music ensembles in the world. Their commitment to creating music purely for the sake of artistic expression has earned them a dedicated following of fans and critics alike.
