The Amici Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1994 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Amici Quartet were violinists David Leung and Erica Raum, violist Joanna Hood, and cellist David Hetherington. All four musicians were accomplished performers in their own right, having played with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in Canada and around the world. The quartet's name, Amici, is Italian for "friends," which reflects the close bond that the musicians share both on and off stage. This camaraderie is evident in their performances, which are characterized by a deep sense of musical understanding and a seamless blend of individual voices into a cohesive whole. Over the years, the Amici Quartet has become known for their innovative programming, which often features lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. They are also committed to promoting Canadian composers and have commissioned and premiered numerous works by Canadian composers, including R. Murray Schafer, John Burge, and Kelly-Marie Murphy. One of the highlights of the Amici Quartet's career was their performance at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. They were invited to represent Canada at the Cultural Olympiad, where they performed a program of Canadian and Australian music to critical acclaim. The quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 2002, they were awarded the prestigious Juno Award for Best Classical Album for their recording of the complete string quartets of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. They have also been nominated for several other Juno Awards and have won multiple awards from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for their recordings and performances. In addition to their work as a quartet, the members of Amici are also highly sought-after soloists and chamber musicians. They have collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians and have performed in major concert halls and festivals around the globe.
