Role:EnsemblePeriod:RomanticModernGenre:OrchestralHelsinki Strings is a classical music ensemble based in Helsinki, Finland. The ensemble was founded in 2002 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a new and innovative approach to classical music performance. The founding members of Helsinki Strings were violinists Pekka Kuusisto and Jaakko Kuusisto, violist Lilli Maijala, cellist Tuomas Lehto, and double bassist Teemu Mastovaara. All of the members were accomplished musicians in their own right, having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in Europe. From the beginning, Helsinki Strings set out to create a unique sound that blended the traditional techniques of classical music with the improvisational spirit of jazz and other genres. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as contemporary pieces by composers like Arvo Pärt and Kaija Saariaho. One of the highlights of Helsinki Strings' early career was their performance at the 2004 Helsinki Festival, where they premiered a new work by Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. The piece, titled "Homunculus," was a challenging and complex work that showcased the ensemble's technical virtuosity and musical sensitivity. Over the years, Helsinki Strings has continued to push the boundaries of classical music performance, collaborating with a wide range of artists and composers from around the world. In 2010, the ensemble worked with jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer on a project that combined classical and jazz improvisation. In addition to their innovative approach to performance, Helsinki Strings has also been recognized for their technical excellence and musicality. The ensemble has won numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Finnish State Prize for Music in 2011. One of the most memorable performances in Helsinki Strings' history took place in 2014, when the ensemble performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway. The concert, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world, featured a diverse lineup of artists and performers, including Sting, Hozier, and A-ha. Despite their success and acclaim, Helsinki Strings remains committed to their original vision of creating a new and innovative approach to classical music performance. The ensemble continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music, inspiring audiences around the world with their unique sound and musical vision.More....
