Born on April 16, 1980, in Helsinki, Finland, Inkinen showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. He went on to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he received his diploma in violin performance in 2003. Inkinen's interest in conducting began during his time at the Sibelius Academy, where he studied with Jorma Panula, a renowned Finnish conductor. In 2002, Inkinen made his conducting debut with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented and dynamic conductor. In 2004, Inkinen was appointed as the principal conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2015.
