Cornel Stavru was a Romanian classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1946, in Bucharest, Romania. He was the son of a well-known Romanian composer, conductor, and musicologist, Constantin Stavru, who was also the founder of the Romanian National Opera. Cornel Stavru grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age. Cornel Stavru began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed great talent and dedication to music, and by the age of 12, he had already won several national piano competitions. He continued his studies at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. In 1970, Cornel Stavru made his debut as a soloist with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of his career as a concert pianist. He went on to perform with many other orchestras in Romania and abroad, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Cornel Stavru was known for his virtuosity and his ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles. He was particularly admired for his performances of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. One of the highlights of Cornel Stavru's career was his performance at the 1972 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He was the first Romanian pianist to participate in this prestigious competition, and he won the third prize. This was a significant achievement, as the competition was known for its high level of competition and the difficulty of the repertoire. Cornel Stavru continued to perform and record throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and he received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1985, he was awarded the title of "Merited Artist" by the Romanian government, and in 1990, he was awarded the "Order of Cultural Merit" by the President of Romania. In addition to his career as a performer and composer, Cornel Stavru was also a respected music educator. He taught at the National University of Music in Bucharest for many years, and he was known for his dedication to his students and his passion for music education. Cornel Stavru passed away on December 22, 2014, at the age of 68.
