Ensemble Cairn is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in France. The ensemble was founded in 1997 by a group of young musicians who were passionate about exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of classical music. The name "Cairn" refers to a pile of stones used as a marker or guidepost, symbolizing the ensemble's commitment to charting new paths in music. The ensemble's core members include clarinetist Jean-Christophe Murer, cellist Eric-Maria Couturier, pianist Emmanuel Olivier, and percussionist Matthias Champon. Over the years, the ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of composers, performers, and artists, including Pierre Boulez, Helmut Lachenmann, and Kaija Saariaho. One of the ensemble's early highlights was its performance at the Festival d'Automne in Paris in 1998, where they premiered works by composers such as Philippe Hurel and Tristan Murail. This performance helped establish the ensemble as a leading force in contemporary classical music. In 2001, Ensemble Cairn released its first album, "Cairn," which featured works by Boulez, Lachenmann, and Saariaho. The album received critical acclaim and helped raise the ensemble's profile internationally. In 2004, the ensemble was invited to perform at the Donaueschingen Festival, one of the most prestigious contemporary music festivals in Europe. The ensemble's performance of Murail's "Winter Fragments" was particularly well-received, and helped cement their reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting ensembles in contemporary classical music. In 2007, Ensemble Cairn collaborated with the French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj on a production of "Siddhartha," which premiered at the Paris Opera. The production featured music by Bruno Mantovani, performed live by Ensemble Cairn, and was widely praised for its innovative blend of music and dance. In 2010, the ensemble released its second album, "Cairn(s)," which featured works by composers such as Hurel, Saariaho, and Philippe Leroux. The album was once again well-received by critics, and helped solidify the ensemble's reputation as one of the most important ensembles in contemporary classical music. In addition to its performances and recordings, Ensemble Cairn is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has worked with schools and community organizations to promote contemporary classical music. Over the years, Ensemble Cairn has received numerous awards and accolades for its work. In 2008, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros for its album "Cairn(s)." In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the Victoire de la Musique Classique, one of the most prestigious awards in French classical music, for its album "Abysses." Today, Ensemble Cairn continues to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music, collaborating with composers and artists from around the world to create innovative and exciting new works. With its commitment to experimentation and exploration, the ensemble remains one of the most important and influential ensembles in contemporary classical music.
