Jérôme Combier is a French composer of contemporary classical music. He was born on December 23, 1971, in Saint-Étienne, France. Combier grew up in a family of musicians, and his parents were both music teachers. He began playing the piano at a young age and later studied composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Combier's early works were influenced by the spectral music movement, which emphasizes the use of sound spectra and timbre in composition. His first major work, "L'horizon chimérique," was written in 1998 and premiered at the Festival d'Automne in Paris. The piece is a song cycle for baritone and ensemble, based on poems by Paul Éluard. In 2001, Combier was awarded the Prix de Rome, a prestigious French music prize. This allowed him to spend two years studying in Rome, where he was able to explore new musical ideas and develop his own unique style. During this time, he composed several works, including "Tenebrae," a piece for orchestra and electronics that was premiered at the Festival d'Automne in 2003. Combier's music is characterized by its use of extended techniques and unconventional instrumentation. He often incorporates electronics and live processing into his works, creating a unique blend of acoustic and electronic sounds. His compositions are also known for their complex rhythms and intricate textures. One of Combier's most notable works is "Nightmare," a piece for ensemble and electronics that was premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival in 2006. The piece is based on the poem "The Nightmare" by John Henry Fuseli and explores the theme of fear and anxiety. The music is dark and unsettling, with eerie electronic sounds and dissonant harmonies. In 2010, Combier composed "Fractus III," a piece for ensemble and electronics that was commissioned by the Ensemble Intercontemporain. The piece is based on the idea of fragmentation and features a constantly shifting texture that is both chaotic and beautiful. Combier's most recent work is "Les cercles de glace," a piece for orchestra and electronics that was premiered at the Festival d'Automne in 2019. The piece is inspired by the Arctic landscape and explores the theme of climate change. The music is atmospheric and evocative, with shimmering strings and icy electronic sounds. Overall, Jérôme Combier is a highly respected composer in the world of contemporary classical music. His works are known for their innovative use of sound and their exploration of complex themes. Combier continues to push the boundaries of classical music and is sure to be a major figure in the field for years to come.
