Stephen Girko was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Girko showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Girko began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano under the tutelage of his father. He quickly progressed and began performing in public at the age of eight. By the time he was ten, he had won several local competitions and was gaining recognition as a prodigious talent. At the age of twelve, Girko began studying at the Juilliard School in New York City, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. He continued to excel in his studies and was soon performing in major venues across the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In 2003, Girko won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. His performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 was hailed as a masterpiece, and he was awarded the top prize. Following his victory at the Van Cliburn Competition, Girko's career took off. He began performing with major orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also began recording extensively, releasing several critically acclaimed albums. In 2008, Girko was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. The award recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise for the future. Girko was the youngest recipient of the award at the time, and it cemented his status as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. Throughout his career, Girko has been known for his virtuosic technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he plays. He has a particular affinity for the music of the Romantic era, and his performances of works by composers such as Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff are considered some of the best in the world. In addition to his performing career, Girko is also a dedicated teacher.
