Gitta Alpar was a Hungarian-born classical music artist who gained international recognition for her soprano voice and performances in operas and concerts. She was born on February 5, 1903, in Budapest, Hungary, to a family of musicians. Her father, Leo Alpar, was a well-known violinist, and her mother, Margit Bokor, was a pianist. Gitta showed an early interest in music and began singing at a young age. At the age of 16, Gitta made her debut as a soloist with the Budapest Opera, singing the role of Rosina in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville." Her performance was well-received, and she was soon offered a contract with the opera company. She continued to perform with the Budapest Opera for several years, singing leading roles in operas such as "Carmen," "La Traviata," and "Rigoletto." In 1926, Gitta was invited to perform at the Vienna State Opera, where she made her debut as Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto." Her performance was a huge success, and she was offered a contract with the opera company. She continued to perform with the Vienna State Opera for several years, singing leading roles in operas such as "The Magic Flute," "Don Giovanni," and "The Marriage of Figaro." In addition to her opera performances, Gitta also gave concerts throughout Europe and the United States. She was known for her beautiful soprano voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. She was particularly admired for her performances of Hungarian folk songs, which she often included in her concerts. In 1933, Gitta made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, singing the role of Rosalinde in Johann Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus." Her performance was well-received, and she was invited back to the Metropolitan Opera for several more seasons. She also performed with other opera companies in the United States, including the San Francisco Opera and the Chicago Opera. Throughout her career, Gitta received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1936, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary for her achievements in music. She was also awarded the Franz Liszt Prize in 1956 and the Kossuth Prize in 1963, both of which are prestigious awards in Hungary. Gitta continued to perform well into her 70s, and she remained a beloved figure in the world of classical music until her death on February 17, 1991, at the age of 88. She was remembered for her beautiful voice, her passionate performances, and her dedication to the art of classical music.
