Steven Harlos is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on August 22, 1958, in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which inspired him to pursue a career in music. Harlos began his musical journey at a young age, taking piano lessons from his father. He showed exceptional talent and dedication, and by the age of 12, he was already performing in public. He continued to hone his skills and went on to study music at the University of North Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. After completing his undergraduate studies, Harlos went on to pursue a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan. He studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue, Gyorgy Sandor, who had a profound impact on his musical development. Harlos also had the opportunity to work with other distinguished musicians, including Leon Fleisher, Menahem Pressler, and John Perry. Harlos' talent and hard work paid off, and he began to establish himself as a prominent pianist. He won several awards and competitions, including the National Chopin Competition, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. Harlos' career took off in the 1980s, and he began to perform extensively in the United States and abroad. He has performed with many renowned orchestras, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many distinguished conductors, including Leonard Slatkin, Andrew Litton, and James Conlon. One of Harlos' most significant achievements was his appointment as the principal pianist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 1983. He held this position for over 30 years, during which he performed in countless concerts and recordings. He also served as the artistic director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's summer music festival, the Vail Valley Music Festival, for several years. Harlos' repertoire is vast and diverse, ranging from classical to contemporary music. He has recorded numerous albums, including solo piano works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, as well as chamber music by Brahms, Beethoven, and Schumann. He has also recorded works by contemporary composers, including John Corigliano, Lowell Liebermann, and William Bolcom. Harlos is not only a talented pianist but also a dedicated educator. He has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of North Texas, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Michigan. He has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, inspiring and mentoring young musicians. Harlos' contributions to the world of music have not gone unnoticed, and he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1991, he was awarded the Silver Medal at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. He was also named the Texas Musician of the Year by the Texas Legislature in 1995. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Linz Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural life of Dallas.
